What books do you need to learn medical coding?

So I had someone reach out to me and ask what books I recommend to learn medical coding. Keep in mind that this person is doing self-teaching. So that means that they are not taking an actual coding course. They do not have a program that they are following. I think it would be difficult to learn coding without taking an actual course, but it can be done. Watch this quick video below!

Don’t want to watch the video? Here is a quick summary. The books I recommend are:

Step By Step Medical Coding by Carol Buck

Step By Step Medical Coding Workbook by Carol Buck

ICD-10-CM Book- 2024 book (from any publisher)

CPT book- 2024 Professional Edition from the AMA

HCPCS Book- 2024 (from any publisher).

Note: The 2024 edition of the Step by Step Medical Coding by Carol Buck will be published in the end of December 2023.

I hope this helps! Are any of you studying to be a medical coder completely on your own? Let me know in the comments!
