Coding Tutorial: Find the ICD-10-CM code for sprained ankle

Here is a quick video showing how to find the ICD-10-CM code for sprained ankle-

Here are the steps:

  • Go to S in the Index
  • Read down the page until you find the word sprain
  • Underneath that there are different choices based on the ligament. In this example, we looked at the code for sprain of the deltoid ligament–which codes to S93.42-
  • Then findS93.42- in the tabular and you’ll see there are different codes for right, left and unspecified ankle.
  • Then after you’ve chosen the correct code, you’d add the 7th character (A, D or S) depending on what your documentation says.

Were you able to code this? If you have any questions, please post in the comments.
