I’ve been teaching ICD-10-CM study groups for just about a year now and I’ve learned lots of things about my students. The first thing I’ve learned is that they are willing to put the time in. Almost all of my students attend all 4 sessions that I offer, which is great! They are also super-motivated. Many of them also have full times jobs and/or families to take care of, and they still find time to study medical coding. The last thing that I’ve learned is that many of them did not have to take a medical terminology course prior to starting their medical coding course. I understand that all schools are different and have different requirements–but my students just aren’t familiar with medical terminology. Learning this will come with time I’m sure–but I wanted to do something to help them with this.
So I created a little book, called Medical Terminology For Medical Coders. It starts out by talking about what a prefixes, root words and suffixes and gives examples of each. But what makes this book different is that then it goes into terms that have to do with the CPT book, section by section. My goal designing this was to show how medical terminology ties into the CPT book. This will help them understand the CPT and medical coding as a whole.
